In response, China promised to punish those who offended them and announced military exercises in the waters around Taiwan, which include some of the world’s most transited sea routes.

“This is the first time that the EPL will launch long-range real artillery across the Taiwan Strait”published the state tabloid Global Times before the start of the maneuvers, in reference to the Popular Liberation Army.

Taipéi affirmed que monitorea de cerca los ejercicios y que sus fuerzas se preparan para un conflicto, pero que no lo busca.

“The Ministry of National Defense maintains that it will maintain the principle of preparing for the war without seeking the war, with the attitude of not escalating the conflict and causing disputes”dijo la dependencia taiwanesa en un comunicado.

Taiwan’s 23 million inhabitants live with the possibility of an invasion, and the threat has intensified under President Xi Jinping.

“The announcement of Chinese military exercises represents a clear escalation of the current base of Chinese military activities around Taiwan and the last crisis in the Taiwan Strait of 1995-1996,” commented Amanda Hsiao, analyst of China before the International Crisis Group.

“Beijing is indicating that it rejects the sovereignty of Taiwan”pointed out.

Sin embargo, analysts have said to AFP that China is not looking to escalate the situation beyond its control, at least now.

“Yo creo que son cuandosos de no querer escalar más allá de su control”opinó Chong Ja Ian, associate professor at the National University of Singapore.

“The last thing that Xi wants is that there is an accidental war,” said Titus Chen, associate professor of political sciences at the Universidad Nacional Sun Yat-Sen de Taiwan.
