El ODS 3, health and wellness, at the center of the ESG Agenda

Si algo nos ha enseñado la pandemia es que la salud es lo primero. The current panorama, two years after the start of the COVID-19, has shown that health and wellness are a fundamental aspect of the ESG Agenda. In this sense, they have become a central element of business strategies and sustainable development. Así lo muestra la “III Edición (2021-2022) la Huella de Salud de las empresas”, an informe elaborated por el Grupo de Acción de Salud y Sostenibilidad de Forética.

The investigation was carried out with the objective of measuring the contribution of companies to the health and well-being of people and advancing towards a greater impact, analyzing the importance for companies to implement programs that ensure the highest standards of health, security and well-being for las y los empleados -incluyendo la salud mental- en todas las operaciones y cadenas de valor globales y, al miso tiempo, expand el acceso a servicios preventiveos básicos en los lugares de empleo. The document affirms that, of the analyzed companies, 73% inform in a specific way about the ODS 3 and, 67%, contaban en 2021 with concrete actions aimed at protecting and caring for health and security, and for their employees, or yendo más allá, y abordando también la salud de consumers y providers. In this sense, the study proposes three great fields in which the organizations, as key actors of the economy, are called to develop a good business management. These are our areas:

  1. Lograr seguridad y bienestar para los empleados
  2. Promote healthy styles of life among their clients and consumers through their offer of products and services
  3. Salvaguardar la salud y el bienestar en sus operaciones y cadenas de supply y comunidad en general.

1. Lograr seguridad y bienestar para los empleados: The study addressed the impact of the company on the health of its employees and employees. I have recently confirmed the idea that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has reinforced the presence of health in the business agenda and has served as an accelerator for the implementation of programs centered on health and welfare of the workforce. The implementation of initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle, for example, through sports activities or healthy diets, policies to guarantee digital disconnection or promote mental health (70% of the companies in this index count with initiativas de ambos tipos) o la formationa en asuntos relacionados con la salud, son solo algunos ejemplos de medidas implantadas por las empresas para promover una improvement en la salud y bienestar de sus trabajadores. Además, se observa la salud mental, más allá de la salud física, las empresas dan cada vez una major importance al cuidado de la salud mental de sus trabajadores. Promote healthy lifestyles among their clients and consumers through their offer of products and services: Sobre este aspecto, el documento hace referencia a cómo a través de la oferta de sus productos y servicios, las empresas pueden tener un impacto en la salud de quienes los consumen. According to the investigation, currently consumers value the effort of companies to offer a range of products and services that contribute to their wellbeing and promote healthier lifestyles, and up to 49% would be willing to pay more for a sustainable product .

3. Safeguard health and well-being in operations and supply chains and the community in general: Por último, acerca de este campo, el documento refers to the health and welfare of the employees of the supply chain, as well as of the people who live in the communities and those who have an impact on the company. In this sense, it affirms that we guarantee adequate conditions of health and wellness apart from the entire supply chain, it is a great challenge for companies, because it is the most distant point from their main activity and, therefore, the most difficult to control A pesar de ello, el informe explica que existe una tendency crescendo (y próximamente obligatoria) por parte de las empresas, de preoccuparse no solamente por tener una actividad responsable sino también de ir un paso más allá, asegurándose de que sus providos también actua con social responsibility, garantiando el máximo nivel de salud, seguridad y respeto de los derechos humanos en sus fábricas.
